A Photoshoot with Rae Chesny and Zora’s Garden

June 20, 2022

I recently had the pleasure of photographing author Rae Chesny and her enchanting children’s book, Zora’s Garden. Rae is a dedicated Zora Neale Hurston scholar, often referring to herself as a “Zoraphile.” Her passion for Zora’s legacy is evident in her work, and it was truly inspiring to capture her essence alongside her literary creation.

Zora’s Garden is a heartfelt adventure that honors the real Zora Neale Hurston, blending fact and fiction to introduce young readers to the power of storytelling and the joys of gardening. The narrative follows young Zora in Eatonville, Florida, as she learns from her mother, Lucy, the perfect recipe for creating stories and growing gardens. This beautifully crafted tale reflects Rae’s deep admiration for Zora and her commitment to preserving and sharing her legacy.

During our photoshoot, Rae’s enthusiasm and warmth shone through, making it a delightful experience. Capturing her with Zora’s Garden felt like encapsulating a piece of literary history, as Rae continues to inspire others through her dedication to storytelling and education.

For those interested in exploring this charming book, Zora’s Garden is available in hardcover, with each copy accompanied by flower or vegetable seeds from Farmstead Seed Supply, encouraging readers to embark on their own gardening adventures.

Photographing Rae and her work was not just a professional engagement but a personal privilege. Her commitment to honoring Zora Neale Hurston’s legacy is truly commendable, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have captured this moment in her journey.
